Tricks and Glitch Discoveries

This section will not list discoveries made prior to the release of the HD version unless they were assumed impossible or needed new setups and later found to be possible.

General Terminology/Notes:

  • Temples are split into two halves. Halfway is where the dungeon item is.
  • KB2 = King Bulblin 2 (the fight on the Great Bridge during Zora Escort)
  • Known differences between HD and SD as of April 5, 2016 (anything not listed here was either found later/will be mentioned later or was assumed obvious at the time of writing the pastebin, just never tested due to lack of early route viability)
  • With the exception of Poe 1 Skip's new setup and Gate Unloading, anything that is possible in SD in dungeons was known to be viable at launch. Most of the time save since this game came out is overworld movement detailed in the following section.
  • Game Released on March 4, 2016

The KB2 Problem

  • Several of these routes center around a key problem: Zora Armor is required to beat the game since we can't get water bombs before Lakebed and we can't savewarp through the tunnel due to no EMS (finding either one of these would remedy this problem, but neither seems possible without some crazy wrong warping).
    • Side note: I am technically wrong here because you can superswim to enter and finish Lakebed without either of these things, but it is much harder and slower than TWWHD's manual superswimming to the point of possibly even being impossible to buffer, so that is a TAS only strat.
  • In order to get Zora Armor, we need to beat the Zora Escort.
  • In order to beat the Zora Escort we need to somehow pass KB2.
  • There are 3 known ways to do this that were all known of before the game came out:
    • 1.) Use the Bow
    • 2.) Time bomb throws
    • 3.) Void out in the area before KB2 (you will respawn after where you fight him and you can proceed to get the Zora Armor)
  • At the time of launch, the only known way of getting bombs before Lakebed (assuming you don't have Master Sword at this point) was beating Goron Mines, which defeats the purpose because that requires bow
  • The first discovery remotely related to KB2 was Fyrus Skip. Fyrus Skip was so named because it only allowed you to skip beating Fyrus at the time. Theoretically you could get to KB2 without touching Goron Mines at all, but you would not be able to beat him. Because of this, the original Fyrus Skip Route got the bow, used Ooccoo to leave Goron Mines, and went all the way back down Death Mountain to do Fyrus Skip. This means that KB2 by itself forced an extra 15 minutes-ish onto the run (citation needed). Combined with the fact that you'd need bombs later in the run and didn't get them by beating Goron Mines, this lost another couple minutes to that. But overall, Fyrus Skip still managed to save around 3 minutes.
  • Spurred on by this looming time save, Twilight Princess scientists like Dragonbane worked hard to find a way to skip Goron Mines entirely. The idea was to somehow get to Iza before Lakebed so you could help her with the boomerang and get bombs. To do this, you'd need to get Epona out of bounds and somehow gain enough height in Hyrule Field to backflip off of Epona into the loading zone to Zora's Domain. Luckily, there is a ledge in North Hyrule Field that is semi-out-of-bounds that we could use to barely get to the right height range. Now all we needed to do was get Epona out of bounds in North Hyrule Field with a more lenient height range.
  • One important thing to note is that all of the Hyrule Field areas (except those directly adjacent to Castle Town) are all on the same map. So you could leave Epona in the ground in North Hyrule Field and potentially go back there later to ride up to Zora's Domain. (It would be theoretically possible to load in consecutive areas until you loaded North Hyrule Field, but that was not really viable, so no setups ever did this).
  • There are a few ways to get Epona out of bounds:
    • 1.) Use some trick like Fyrus skip. However, that would put you too low to be useful.
    • 2.) Clip Epona out of bounds using broken geometry.
    • 3.) Backflip off Epona while she rides into an unloaded area, then reload the area and get on her from the ground (she is partially in the ground, so you can go out of bounds).
    • 4.) Use map glitch to ride beyond loading zones out of bounds then place epona wherever you needed her (currently impossible due to lack of map glitch in HD).
  • The first major way to skip Goron Mines used the third method along with back slice to get Epona out of bounds and then almost miraculously position her in a spot that would work for this trick. The entire sequence was documented here. Unfortunately, needing back slice made this sequence slower than the current Fyrus Skip Route.
  • A while later, a consistent method was found (and subsequently improved upon) to clip Epona out of bounds in North Hyrule Field using the second method. Essentially, there is a seam on some ledges between where Epona would step up a rising ledge and where she would run into the wall. By riding Epona through this seam, it was possible to get her out of bounds in the range needed to gain height on the other side of North Hyrule Field. This method was simple enough to be able to save 9 minutes over the course of the run if executed perfectly.
  • Now that we could get to Iza before KB2 in a reasonable amount of time, it became possible to get the bomb bag. To do this we would need to help her out with the rocks and go all the way down the river. Since we did not have the bow, we needed to use the lent bomb bag and the gale boomerang to break the rocks. We already knew this was possible, but updated some of the strats to make it far more consistent (it was never a strat developed in SD since it was never needed in any categories). Finally we would use these bombs to beat KB2 and finish the run normally. As a side effect, having a permanent bomb bag here saved a few minutes after KB2 and the whole sequence saved around 9 minutes.
  • But this sequence still irked many. The whole sequence was 3 difficult tricks in a row and the sequence stayed in the route for nearly 2 years. It became colloquially known as "The Gauntlet" because only runs that made it past this point had a chance at being good. Beyond this, all of the movement out of bounds, helping Iza, boating down the river, walking across Lake Hylia to Fyer twice, and having to beat KB2 with bombs in three passes left a lot of time on the table. So the holy grail became using the void out method to get past KB2 without needing bombs or the bow.
  • There is a known method recently used in SD 100% that uses Epona to get onto the cart at the start of the Zora Escort, uses a boomerang LJA to get onto a wall, and uses a back slice bomb boost to get onto the top of said wall, from which point, we could just walk until we jumped into the void. There are several problems with this method for HD however, even when you completely disregard that the method is extremely hard as is. In HD, you start at a different angle, so current setups for getting on the cart would not work. Also in HD, there are more angles and Epona controls differently, so any setup for getting on the cart would be inconsistent and require a ton of work to get a new setup. But even then - even if we could get onto the cart without bombs consistently (which is technically possible) - we would need back slice and bombs to get this to work. Obviously needing bombs defeats the purpose entirely. A route getting back slice before KB2 already wastes all but 1 minute of the time that could be saved through this method, so needing bombs for this is a deal breaker. However, in HD, you can gain extra height by pressing c-up after walking up a little bit. This would make it theoretically possible to back slice up the ledge without bombs. But after a lot of experimenting, though we can't rule out the method entirely, such a combination of position and angle was never found (although you can get very close).
  • The only other possible methods of getting out of bounds would be to jump over the fences (which is impossible, we tried everything) or clipping out of bounds. In comes MrMrMen (who I swear is giving us hints from the future or something). In Early/Mid-August, he had found an upwarp method for Poe 1 Skip. A couple weeks later, he finds a way of using a statue to clip through the door on the way to the boss of Temple of Time without needing to retrieve the big statue (unfortunately that trick does not seem to work in HD, but I digress). Clearly, MrMrMen knows a lot about the weird geometry of this game. So the very next day, to literally everyone's surprise, he has figured out a way to clip out of bounds using Epona's head, a ledge, and a corner in the area before KB2. How he figured this out I have no idea, but the trick does not require Iron Boots, the boomerang, or bombs.
  • So that's where we are today. After a long 2.5 year journey from early March 2016 to late August 2018, we have now completely killed the KB2 problem. But the problem was such a core piece of almost all of the reroutes that I think it deserved this lengthy explanation.

Major Any% Routes/Discoveries

Original Route (Glitched-Casual Playthrough)

  • Adopted circa March 1, 2016 (early copies)
  • Goes through all the dungeons in order, does all the sidequests between dungeons that are required in a casual playthrough, but uses LJAs and clips in dungeons.
  • Best known time with this route: 5:47:55 by Skyreon on March 3, 2016

Second Route (Early City Route)

  • Adopted circa March 4, 2016
  • Skipped the second half of Snowpeak Ruins, all of Temple of Time, and the Hidden Village/Ancient Sky Book Sequence
  • Saved around an hour or so
  • Best known time with this route: 3:58:14 by Demon on March 12, 2016

Early City in the Sky

  • Main article
  • Discovered by SexyZora19, Paraxade before HD came out
  • Confirmed to actually work in HD (many thought it was patched) by Venick on March 4, 2016
    • Side note: There are a few reasons why people thought this trick didn't work. First of all, Nintendo increased the size of the statue, so the trick is a little harder (though it's still extremely easy). Second of all, people started to like the quick transform function too much and this trick only works if you transform by talking to Midna. Lastly, only a few people had the game because it didn't officially come out until March 4, 2016 (Skyreon had an early copy).
  • Saves an hour or something like that (who knows? the route was never optimized without it)

Third Route (Gate Unloading Route)

  • Adopted circa March 14, 2016
  • Skipped several rooms in City in the Sky using HD exclusive Gate Unloading
  • Saved around 45 seconds
  • Best known time with this route: 3:56:41 by Awsumi on March 17, 2016

Gate Unloading

  • Main article
  • Discovered on March 5, 2016 on stream by Mulsqi
  • Figured out on March 14, 2016 by Orcastraw
  • The game can only load one gate actor per power cycle and due to an SD to HD coding oversight, the game does not unload the gate in Lakebed from memory. Therefore, by loading a similar gate in Lakebed, we can skip several long/annoying rooms in City in the Sky to save around 45 seconds.

Fourth Route (Fyrus Skip)

  • Adopted circa March 26, 2016
  • Skipped the second half of Goron Mines, beat KB2 with the bow, used Pot Clip to bypass the rock in Lakebed Temple, and stole bombs from Iza with wolf to have necessary bombs for the first half of Arbiters Grounds
  • Saved around 2.5 minutes overall
  • Best known time with this route: 3:49:11 by Gymnast86 on May 7, 2016

Fyrus Skip

  • Main article
  • Discovered by Dragonbane on March 26, 2016
  • By using a milk trick to get below the void plane and exploiting infinitely vertical air triggers for twilights, you can skip beating Fyrus (you previously needed to beat him to break the rocks).
  • Saves around 2.5 minutes (would eventually save far more, but you still need the bow at this point in time).

Fifth Route (Gauntlet Route)

  • Adopted circa October 9, 2016
  • Got bombs from Iza using Iza Gale and Epona Clip in order to skip the entirety of Goron Mines. Bombs were used instead of the bow to beat KB2.
  • Saved around 9 minutes overall
  • Best known time with this route: 3:40:15 by Pheenoh on March 26, 2017

Epona Clip

Iza Gale

  • Main article
  • Discovered by 60namrruc before HD came out
  • Improved setup by TrogWW around October 9, 2016 (others modified this setup with slight differences when moving it to HD, specifically Pheenoh early on, but all of those are essentially based on TrogWW's setup)
  • Gets to Iza early to save 9 minutes over doing half of Goron Mines

Improvements to Epona Clip

  • Main article
  • Newer setups by Pheenoh and Rasenurns on January 20, 2017 and August 6, 2017, respectively
    • Side note: the upper echelon of HD runners were basically split on these two setups. Both worked pretty well.
  • Probably saved like 30 seconds to a minute over the old setup

Sixth Route (Splitting Lanayru)

  • Adopted circa November 19, 2017
  • Used Eldin Twilight Wolf to do the first half of Lanayru Twilight backwards (saved around 30 seconds of movement) and split Lanayru Twilight into one half during Eldin Twilight and the second half after Eldin Twilight. This was also the time when most people adopted the easier Kargorok Out of Bounds Clip.
  • Saved around 36 seconds
  • Best known time with this route: 3:40:12 by Jacquaid on June 10, 2018

Eponaless Lanayru Gate Clip

  • Main article
  • Discovered by Rachel before HD came out
  • Consistent method as wolf found by Arbiters Anomalies on August 26, 2016
    • Side note: While it was discovered way back when, it wasn't really implemented until around the time the HD All Dungeons category was created, possibly because the presence of the horse threw us off, and also because few people in the HD speedrunning community were really active. A lot of times tricks are discovered, but only rediscovered by the speedrunning community years later.
  • Saves around 30 seconds of net movement in Lanayru Twilight by allowing us to get the meteor immediately after entering Lanayru Twilight normally

Kargorok Out of Bounds Improvements

  • Main article
  • Discovered by Dragonbane before HD came out
  • Easier clip found by Nitroplay on March 7, 2016 (rediscovered around August 21, 2017)
    • Side note: Yet another one of those things that we just didn't find for like a year+ after it was found. It would have been implemented earlier, but there weren't a lot of high level players running between when this was rediscovered. It was only adopted by any HD runners around the time that the All Dungeons category was created.
  • Saves around 6 seconds of movement

Seventh Route (Poe 1 Skip)

  • Adopted circa July 6, 2018
  • Utilized the new Poe 1 Skip setup to do the first half of Arbiters Grounds backwards
  • This route had been possible before, but Poe 1 Skip was too inconsistent for real runs before the June 2018 setup was discovered
  • Saved around 1 minute and 10 seconds
  • Best known time with this route: 3:35:28 by Pheenoh on August 9, 2018 (This run is outrageously good. Probably the most optimized run this game will ever see on any route)

Poe 1 Skip

  • Main article
  • Discovered by Venick before HD came out
  • New setup developed by Pheenoh, Hakua, and Jacquaid on July 6, 2018 (setup got a lot better over the course of the next week)
  • Saves around 1 minute by altering the order of the rooms in Arbiters Grounds before the Poe Gate

Improvements to Poe 1 Skip

  • Main article
  • Upwarp method discovered by MrMrMen on August 13, 2018
  • Various setups made by a bunch of different people on the same day
  • Saves maybe 10 seconds over a good attempt on the old method. Debatably easier.

Eighth Route (KB2 Skip)

  • Adopted circa August 27, 2018
  • Used KB2 Skip to bypass need to beat KB2 (thus need for bombs or bow) for Zora Armor, skipped all of Goron Mines and Epona Clip/Iza Gale Sequence, reintroduced Pot Clip into the route, steals/dupes Iza Bombs before Arbiters Grounds as wolf for necessary bombs in Arbiters Grounds
  • Saved around 7.5 minutes overall
  • Best known time with this route: 3:28:34 by Demon on October 13, 2018

KB2 Skip

  • Main article
  • Discovered by MrMrMen on August 27, 2018
  • Saves around 7.5 minutes and eliminates the "gauntlet" (the epona clip/iza gale/kb2 with bombs sequence)
  • By voiding out in the area before fighting KB2, we can skip getting both bombs and bow, which itself saves like 10 minutes, but then due to other route differences from needing bombs eventually and not having them in Lakebed Temple, we only save around 7.5 minutes over the previous major route overall.

Major All Dungeons Routes/Discoveries

Original Route

  • Adopted circa November 19, 2017 (when the category was made)
  • A play off of the third major Any% route with minor changes:
    • Finished Snowpeak instead of skipping the second half
    • Used Fyrus Skip because it was still faster than watching the Messenger cutscene
    • Used the Lanayru Twilight Splitting from the sixth major Any% route
    • Beat Temple of Time sometime between City in the Sky and Hyrule Castle (order of Temple of Time and Palace of Twilight does not matter)
  • There were a few different routes really early on, but the fastest route known at the time was pretty quickly implemented across all runs, so I'm not going to list a bunch of different tentative routes because we already knew all the strats, but just hadn't implemented them yet.
  • Best known time on this route: 4:22:27 by Jacquaid on August 9, 2018

Second Route (KB2 Skip Route)

  • Adopted circa August 27, 2018
  • Used the aforementioned KB2 Skip to delay Goron Mines until after Snowpeak (any time after Goron Mines saves a significant amount of time)
    • Side note: Epona Clip was not used early on because, even though you would save time due to doing Goron Mines later, you need to beat Goron Mines anyways, so it was faster overall to just take the hit on Goron Mines to avoid the Epona Clip/Iza Gale sequence and just get bombs very quickly from Barnes after Goron Mines. With KB2 Skip, since the Epona Clip/Iza Gale sequence was no longer necessary to postpone Goron Mines, it was now faster to postpone Goron Mines. A side effect is that this loses some of that extra time to lack of bombs in Lakebed Temple and needing to dupe bombs from Iza before Arbiters Grounds (which is before you can beat Goron Mines after getting Master Sword).
  • Saved around 3-4 minutes overall
  • Best known time on this route: 4:20:28 by Jacquaid on September 21, 2018
